Moto.it

Client's needs:
The leading Italian motorcycle sector portal, MOTO.IT, initiated the complete re-engineering of its web platform in 2009 and 2010.
CRM srl, publisher of MOTO.IT, had achieved outright market leadership, particularly in the ADS sector, using its own in-house technology. Its volume of traffic (about 30 million page views a month, with bandwidth above 50 Mbps) and the evolution of its business logic (private individuals, dealers, advertising revenues, and subscription revenues) demanded a change in strategy. CRM very bravely decided to outsource the development of core technology, keeping its own resources, including IT, focused on the presentation layers and customisation for dealers.

The load on the system necessitated a very thorough tuning of the whole system. In detail, the mechanisms implemented were:
  • Statisticisation of various components of the site, obviously not by their nature the dynamic ones (registration, search, insert-ads, etc.) which in fact generate the most traffic
  • Activation, monitoring and tuning of cache at the functions and application pool level
  • Balancing of front-end web servers by means of external appliances
  • Activation of multiple application pools to optimise the memory footprint

Advantages
  • The platform has achieved a remarkable level of performance and stability
  • Total page view traffic increased by about 30%. The company discovered that at peak times, even though the old system seemed to work just a little slowly, in fact it was losing traffic (due to user distrust)
  • The publisher can focus specifically on content management
  • The site has changed from mainly ads to a complete portal. Ads traffic has not decreased, but has actually risen
  • The video section can become a sort of web TV
  • The creation of ‘mobile’ versions or the development of apps for iPhone/iPad can take place under vastly better costs and conditions
