Caritas

Client's needs:
Caritas Internationalis is one of the largest international humanitarian relief and development networks that operates in 200 countries worldwide. The organization’s main need is to share information between all the seats and activate a solidarity network in case of humanitarian emergencies, by pooling experience and resources.

In particular:
  • Working groups that produce studies and papers concerning interregional issues (desertification, child labour, women’s condition....).
  • SOA (emergencies): classification of needs and collection of material and immaterial goods.

Users, who are acknowledged within local organizations, are invited to participate in various initiatives according to their specific expertise.

Solution:
Through the Spin&Go.Net content management platform Engitel has developed an intranet application in the 3 languages used by the organization (English, Spanish and French).

When users log in they can view their competence fields and the website in the selected language.
Within working groups participants can produce the papers required for thematic publications that become guidelines to develop projects and draw the attention of involved institutions. Papers are produced in a cooperative and structured way in order to trace group’s reviews and remarks. The interaction is Web-based and the moderator has the task to conclude interventions and reviews.
The final document is then transformed into a “publication” that is made available on the Web and in paper form.

Emergencies’ management (SOA) includes the creation of a profile describing support or assistance requests. The profile specifies:
  • Intervention’s coordinator
  • Geographical area
  • Emergency reason
  • Necessary material/immaterial resources and money
  • Status of resources collection and relevant destination
All the international members of the organization can help by supplying requested resources.
In the end, a paper report is produced and then included in the publication of annual reports.

Advantages
The system has been developed paying attention to the size of pages and a simple interaction of users in order to provide a valuable support also to areas with limited technological resources. An English two-page manual was sent via e-mail to explain the essential elements to properly use this instrument.

The online creation, definition and review of papers have allowed to cut back on postal charges thus enabling users to participate more actively.

The online SOA definition allows to implement a process of communication and resource collection that is easy and immediate, thus reducing times to launch appeals and communicate resources availability.
